    Digging through some old magazines in my basement, I came across a Fisherman for Sept. 12, 1985 and found that Fred was not only editor at that time, but he was also second in the New York Surf Fishing Contest at that point with a 46 1 2-pound striper!Manhattan Cup organizers Frank Crescitelli (L) and and Gary Caputi (middle) in the photo with Golofaro and Ristori (R) The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported another great morning of limit sea bass fishing before adding ling to the bags in the afternoon.

    Posted on June 6, 2021 More fifties one in the surf There s no question about the unusual abundance of 50-pound striped bass n NY NJ Bight waters as the spawned-out bass seem to be moving slowly up to summering grounds in New England. Chuck Many has been doing a job on them with live eels, but a lowly salted clam from Grumpy s Tackle in Seaside Park produced the first I ve heard of in the surf.

    Posted on June 3, 2021 Some good fluke news Unusually cold spring water temperatures have been good for striped bass fishing, and certainly haven t hurt the sea bass bite, but there were no good fluke reports coming in until the Elaine B. II from Highlands got into lots of shorts and many limits Wednesday. The Star Fish with Captain Carl Sheppard and mates Jon and Max had a local family out for a day of active bottom fishing.

    See photo below, Capt. Ron Santee Jr. continues to enjoy good sea bass fishing on his Fishermen along with some ling up to 4 pounds along plus a few winter flounder. The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported continued hot sea bass action today plus ling and a few whiting but there was no mention of the tuna they saw the day before.

    Many has been catching big stripers with his technique of trolling live eels on planer boards, and we had a perfect day to run down the beach and deploy a multitude of rods set at various depths in the still cool ocean waters that are holding spawned-out bass moving up the coast to New England. When Lou first saw the fish come up he thought it was a shark, but was actually an even bigger bass which recorded 51 pounds on Chuck s Boga Grip.

    Bottom fishing in particular is often poor after a storm, but the Golden Eagle from Belmar found the largest inshore sea bass of the season which ranged up to Leon Murray s 5-pounder. Capt. Rob Semkewyc caught some fluke with his Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands, but said it still wasn t good.
